In the Ascomycete fungi, the transcriptional response to divers stresses involves the coregulation of approximately 900 genes and is termed the environmental stress resonse(ESR). This gene expression profile is conserved in both Saccharomyces cerevisiae and Schizosaccharomyces pombe, species that diverged approximately 500 million years ago. Interestingly, although the response is the same, the proteins that sense the initial stress, the transduction pathways that propagate the signals, and the transcription factors that ultimately activate the ESR are very different in S. cerevisiae and S. pombe. I will take a computational approach to study the ESR in different fungal species, with the goal of developing novel computational tools and approaches to study the evolution of the response to environmental stress.
