My research interests focus on using information-seeking theory to understand and explain the patterns of lay people’s information-seeking behaviors (ISBs) that are related to their genetic health concerns, as well as to be able to derive information system (IS) design requirements to inform the IS designer.

My pilot study used exploratory interviews with women seeking prenatal genetic counseling to discover pregnant women’s information needs, ISBs and information resources they used prior to their prenatal genetic counseling. The pilot study results illustrated different patterns of ISBs (e.g., active vs. passive), yet revealed common themes in uncertainty (uncertain mental state and outcomes) among different individuals for initiating their ISBs. These patients had experienced uncertainty in two ways, cognitive response to the situation and predictive outcome risk appraisal. My career goal is to develop an IS for lay people who are interested in genetic health but in need of additional help in understanding the risks, disease process, consequences of testing, and treatment options and make genetic health information accessible to lay people in a more effective and efficient way. This would promote informed decision making and genetic health.
